Blue Paint Flakes Off Renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool

The blue paint or material applied to the base of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is already peeling off, just weeks after a significant renovation. The pool, a prominent feature between the Lincoln and Washington Monuments, underwent refurbishment ordered by President Donald Trump, who had described the pool's previous condition as "terrible and disgusting."

The $14.7 million contract for the renovation was awarded without a competitive bidding process. Initially, Trump stated he awarded the contract to an acquaintance, but later clarified he did not award it himself and does not know the contractor. The project aimed to make the pool "more beautiful and more beautiful than ever before."

Despite the Interior Department describing the water as "crystal clear" and efforts by the National Park Service to remove algae, images show the water remains cloudy. The blue material is visibly flaking from the pool's base and coloring the water. Hydrogen peroxide has been added to the pool in an attempt to combat algae blooms, which have turned the water green instead of the intended dark blue.

Algae has been a persistent problem at the reflecting pool, with previous administrations, including President Barack Obama's, also struggling to manage it. Photos taken on June 18 show that the algae issue persists, and the water does not appear crystal clear, contradicting official statements.
