Bode George Defends Cardinal Onaiyekan Against Wike's Criticism

Former Deputy National Chairman of Nigeria's Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olabode George, has publicly defended Cardinal John Onaiyekan, describing him as the "Desmond Tutu of Nigeria." George urged Onaiyekan to disregard criticisms from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and other government officials regarding his comments on the nation's condition.

George drew parallels between Onaiyekan's challenges and those faced by the late South African cleric Desmond Tutu. One government official said Onaiyekan was only speaking for Catholics, as if other Christians, Muslims and atheists are not affected by the policies of this administration. Another official said Onaiyekan is working for the opposition.

He further addressed claims by some officials that Onaiyekan spoke only for Catholics or was working for the opposition. George invoked a biblical analogy, comparing critics to those who chose Barabbas over Jesus Christ, suggesting they were misjudging Onaiyekan's stance. He also emphasized Onaiyekan's respected position as a cardinal and member of the conclave that elects the Pope, noting his age and status as reasons to respect him. George also criticized individuals associated with Wike for their comments directed at him, advocating for respectful engagement among political actors.
