Bolsonaristas Exploit Fauci Hearing to Spread COVID-19 Disinformation Ahead of Elections

Allies of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro are leveraging the recent congressional hearing of Anthony Fauci, the former director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, to reintroduce the COVID-19 pandemic into political discourse.

In recent days, videos questioning vaccines, masks, and other measures taken during the health crisis have resurfaced. Figures ranging from former federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro to Senator Magno Malta have repeated claims that experts tell BBC News Brasil are not supported by scientific evidence. This resurgence of pandemic-related claims comes as Brazil approaches its general elections in October and the U.S. heads toward its midterm elections.

Fauci testified before a U.S. Senate committee investigating his pandemic response on July 29. He invoked the Fifth Amendment, which protects against self-incrimination, more than a hundred times, drawing criticism from Republican lawmakers. Fauci's lawyer stated his client was "protected by law" and denied any admission of guilt, noting that invoking the Fifth Amendment is not a crime and is a common legal tool in the U.S.

Experts emphasize that Fauci's decision not to answer certain questions does not alter the scientific consensus on vaccines, masks, or COVID-19 treatments. They view the exploitation of the hearing by Bolsonaro's allies as a political strategy to mobilize voters. The pandemic has claimed over 700,000 lives in Brazil.
