Bomb threat cancels first day of school at Jakarta elementary

The first day of school at SDN Srengseng Sawah 15 in Jakarta was thrown into chaos Monday after the school received a bomb threat via WhatsApp. The threat prompted immediate evacuation of all students and cancellation of the day's orientation activities, known as Masa Pengenalan Lingkungan Sekolah (MPLS).

Personnel from Gegana Brimob Polri, Indonesia's counter-terrorism unit, alongside Densus 88, conducted a thorough sweep of the school premises. The operation, which began around 7:30 AM WIB, involved a detailed search of classrooms and the surrounding area to ensure no suspicious devices were present. Police reported that no bombs or suspicious items were found after more than two hours of investigation.

The threat was reportedly sent to a teacher and an administrative staff member via WhatsApp during the morning's opening ceremony. The school's usual bustling atmosphere was replaced by a somber quiet as students were sent home as a precautionary measure.

Authorities are actively pursuing the sender of the threat. The head of the Jagakarsa Police, Kompol Nurma Dewi, stated that the identity of the suspect has been determined and efforts are underway to apprehend them and understand their motive. The school awaits the final results of the police investigation before resuming normal academic activities.
