Božinović at Struga Banska: 'Two police officers saved 48 civilians from certain death'

In the village of Struga Banska, Croatia held a solemn commemoration marking the 35th anniversary of the deaths of 13 Croatian police officers. These officers lost their lives in July 1991 while defending the nascent Croatian state against attacks by Serb paramilitary forces, an act that has become a lasting symbol of courage and patriotism.

The ceremony drew family members of the fallen officers, fellow combatants, and representatives from state institutions, local government, and veterans' associations. The Croatian police were the only organized force at the beginning of the war that was armed and could offer some resistance to the JNA. Croatian police officers were fewer in number, less armed, but they showed immense will, desire, and courage.

During the event, Croatian Interior Minister Davor Božinović emphasized the critical role of the police force in the early stages of the war. He stated that the Croatian police were the only organized and armed force capable of resisting the Yugoslav People's Army at the time. Božinović specifically recounted the bravery of two reserve officers who, through their self-sacrifice, saved 48 civilians from certain death, underscoring the immense will and courage displayed by the police despite being outnumbered and outgunned.
