Brazil Calls Milei's Remarks 'Harsh, Rude, Unacceptable,' Summons Envoy

Brazil's Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira has strongly condemned remarks made by Argentine President Javier Milei during a political convention in Brazil, labeling them "harsh, rude, and unacceptable."

Milei, speaking at a convention for the Liberal Party on Saturday, referred to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as a "prisoner" and Supreme Court Justice Gilmar Mendes as "bald trash." He also claimed Lula would cause an economic crisis in Brazil and expressed confidence that Senator Flávio Bolsonaro could prevent socialism.

Vieira stated that Brazil requires an explanation from the Argentine government regarding why its president would visit Brazilian territory to make such statements. He emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that diplomacy relies on conversation, but described the episode as "extremely serious and unacceptable."

In response, Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Argentina's ambassador, Daniel Raimondi, to convey the Brazilian government's "repulsion to the insults issued by President Javier Milei" and to demand an explanation. Additionally, Brazil's ambassador in Buenos Aires, Julio Bitelli, was called back for consultations, a significant diplomatic protest.

There is no precedent for a foreign president who, on national territory, heaps aggressions and offenses on the Head of State, democratic institutions, including the Judiciary, and the Brazilian people. It is especially regrettable that this infamous episode involves the president of a country with which Brazil has 203 years of friendship and cooperation and which has, in Brazil, its main trading partner.

The Itamaraty (Brazil's Foreign Ministry) issued a statement calling the incident unprecedented, highlighting that no foreign president had previously launched such attacks on a head of state, democratic institutions, or the judiciary while on Brazilian soil. The ministry expressed particular regret that these "infamous insults" came from the president of a nation with which Brazil shares a long history of friendship and cooperation and whose primary trading partner Brazil is.
