Brazil’s presidential candidates ride the social-media wave, attack the Supreme Court, but embrace Mendonça

Brazil’s presidential candidates used the crisis at the Supreme Federal Court to sharpen their attacks on the court’s ministers during September 7 events, while rallying behind one of its members, André Mendonça.

The candidates turned to social media and public events to reinforce their criticism of the court. Yet their opposition to the justices did not extend to Mendonça, whom they supported.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stood apart from the other candidates. The Workers’ Party leader avoided the issue instead of joining the attacks or expressing support for Mendonça.
