Brazil Senate leader rejects new impeachment petitions against Moraes, will await Supreme Court

Brazil's Senate president, Davi Alcolumbre, has told allies he will not advance new impeachment petitions against Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, despite the release of messages involving the justice and former banker Daniel Vorcaro.

Lawmakers filed the new requests after the conversations became public. Alcolumbre's position is that tensions should cool and that the Senate should wait at least until the Supreme Court rules on the matter.

On Tuesday, Justice André Mendonça asked Supreme Court President Edson Fachin to schedule a full-court session to discuss the messages identified by the Federal Police. Such a session could lead to an investigation into Moraes.

Mendonça wants the full court to examine the issue regardless of the prosecutor-general's position. Fachin, however, is expected to wait for the Prosecutor-General's Office to state its view before deciding whether to schedule the session.
