Brazil Senator Calls Prosecutor's Order 'Absurd Attempt at Intimidation'

Senator Alessandro Vieira has labeled a directive from Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet as "another absurd and illegal attempt at intimidation." The order, issued by Gonet and stemming from a complaint by Supreme Court Minister Gilmar Mendes, directs the Sergipe Electoral Prosecutor's Office to investigate Vieira.

Vieira, who serves as the rapporteur for the Senate's Organized Crime CPI, stated he learned of the order through the press. He claims the Senate's legal team was denied access to the case files, while a copy was allegedly leaked to the media. The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office maintains the case is under seal.

"I am fully aware of the risks faced by those who challenge the powerful in Brasília, but I remain firm in the mission to ensure that justice in Brazil is one day equal for all," Vieira declared on X. The controversy originated in April when Vieira's final report for the Organized Crime CPI proposed indicting Gilmar Mendes, Ministers Dias Toffoli and Alexandre de Moraes, and Gonet himself for crimes of responsibility. The majority of the committee rejected the report's findings, but it has since led to repercussions for the senator.

Gilmar Mendes had requested the Prosecutor-General's Office to investigate Vieira for abuse of authority, citing the senator's report. According to Vieira, Gonet dismissed the primary accusation of abuse of authority but left open the possibility of electoral misconduct for regional prosecutors to consider.

Mendes argued in his request that Vieira "forgot about his fellow militiamen and decided to involve the Supreme Federal Court." He also referenced a statement from the STF Presidency, which repudiated the "illegal initiative of indictment" and emphasized the Supreme Court's role in safeguarding the Constitution and democratic freedoms. Minister Dias Toffoli, meanwhile, suggested that electoral courts should disqualify politicians whose actions are purely for electoral gain.

Separately, Vieira is also facing legal action from Minister Alexandre de Moraes's family over statements made in a television interview. Vieira, first elected senator in 2018, is currently seeking re-election.
