Brazil VP: Lula Will Handle Senator's Fraud Case; Police Independence Key

Brazil's Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin, has asserted that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will manage the "crisis" stemming from Senator Jaques Wagner's alleged ties to the Banco Master fraud case effectively. Alckmin stressed the unwavering independence of the Federal Police in carrying out their duties, framing it as an example of the government's commitment to republican principles.

The investigation involves allegations that Senator Wagner, the government's leader in Congress, received bribes. These accusations reportedly stem from a property purchase valued at R$2.5 million and payments totaling R$3.5 million to a family company. Evidence cited by the Federal Police includes messages found on the mobile phone of banker Daniel Vorcaro, who was arrested in connection with the fraud. These messages allegedly show Wagner requesting favors from Vorcaro and acting as an intermediary to relay messages to President Lula.

Senator Wagner was the target of search and seizure operations as part of the ninth phase of "Operação Compliance Zero" on Thursday. Despite the ongoing investigation and indications that Wagner might step down from his congressional leadership role, the senator has denied any relationship with Vorcaro and disclaimed responsibility for third-party conversations. The case is seen as affecting both left-wing and right-wing political figures, given the widespread nature of the alleged fraud.
