Brazilian Championship implements semi-automatic offside technology

The Brazilian Championship, known as Brasileirão, is set to enhance its officiating with the introduction of semi-automatic offside technology. This advanced system will debut this weekend during the 20th round of matches, marking a significant technological leap for South American football.

The implementation involves equipping 20 stadiums across Brazil with between 28 and 32 cameras each. These cameras will capture high-definition, real-time footage, which will be transmitted to the Brazilian Football Confederation's (CBF) VAR Operations Center in Rio de Janeiro. This center, equipped with 10 integrated control rooms, will process the data to assist referees.

According to the CBF, the semi-automatic offside technology (SAOT) is designed to detect offside positions with instantaneous precision. The rollout included an eight-month process of technical inspections, camera installations, and official match testing. This comprehensive approach ensured that referees, VAR officials, and technical staff received thorough training, validating the system before its official launch.

CBF President Samir Xaud emphasized that modernizing refereeing is a key priority for his administration. He stated that adopting this technology places the Brasileirão among the world's leading competitions. The new system will make its official debut this Saturday, with multiple matches across the league featuring its use.
