Brieva wildfire forces evacuations as wind risk persists

A wildfire in Brieva, Segovia, Spain, continues to rage, prompting the evacuation of more than 400 residents. The fire is currently at Level 2 of the Potential Severity Index, with authorities maintaining protective measures and confinement orders due to strong winds.

The decision to keep residents evacuated stems from challenging weather conditions, including southwest winds of approximately 25 kilometers per hour with strong gusts, temperatures nearing 34 degrees Celsius, and a mere seven percent relative humidity. These factors pose a significant risk of the fire flaring up again.

Despite these concerns, the fire's overall progression is considered favorable, with minimal changes to its perimeter since Monday. The regional government reports that over 80 percent of the fire's perimeter is now secured, thanks to heavy machinery and the ongoing efforts of firefighting teams who are expanding defensive lines to consolidate control.

The blaze necessitated the evacuation of 420 people from Tenzuela, Losana de Pirón, Carrascal de la Cuesta, La Cuesta, Aldeasaz, Berrocal, Caballar, and Santo Domingo de Pirón. Pelayos del Arroyo remains under confinement as a precautionary measure. The return of residents is contingent on the fire's evolution and weather developments.

In parallel, agricultural technicians are assessing the needs of livestock operations in the affected areas. The regional government has announced that initial food deliveries for livestock in Santo Domingo de Pirón, Brieva, Berrocal, and Tenzuela will commence Wednesday to ensure supply during the ongoing restrictions. The firefighting operation has involved 55 resources, including 46 ground units and nine aerial units, with approximately 220 people participating. The emergency committee will reconvene at 9:00 PM to reassess the situation.
