Floods in Northern India Kill 10, Affect Over 300,000

At least 10 people have died and over 300,000 have been affected by severe flooding in Assam, a state in northeastern India, due to the ongoing monsoon rains. The State Disaster Management Authority reported that nearly 800 villages and 20,000 hectares of farmland are inundated.

The Indian Army has been deployed to rescue stranded individuals, successfully saving 571 people from affected villages in the Upper Assam region. Meanwhile, the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries continue to swell, exacerbating the flood situation across vast areas.

We have adopted a comprehensive approach of governance to tackle the current flood situation in a large part of Upper Assam (...) The teams deployed on the ground are taking all necessary measures, such as reinforcing embankments and installing additional barriers with sandbags and controlled drainage systems, to protect lives and property.

Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, stated that the government is taking a comprehensive approach to manage the crisis. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and ensuring timely aid reaches affected families, underscoring the critical role of the monsoon season, which provides about 75% of India's annual rainfall and is vital for its agriculture.
