Brussels Neighborhood Residents Threaten Legal Action Over Persistent Nuisance on Heizel Plateau: "You're Making Us Targets"

For years, residents around Brussels' Heizel plateau have endured a relentless barrage of noise and disruptive behavior, primarily from street racers and motorcyclists with modified exhausts. The situation, described by the group Stop Rodeo Atomium as "shelling terror," has reached a boiling point, prompting threats of legal action against the city council.

The group claims that since the city council implemented concrete barriers to restrict vehicle access, the problem has shifted from cars to motorcycles, which now seem to have free rein.

Adding to the frustration, a recent incident saw a female member of the group verbally intimidated by motorcyclists after attempting to film them. This occurred despite the mayor's previous encouragement for citizens to gather evidence. Verhaeghe lamented, "They threatened to destroy her phone, and then they called the police themselves to file a complaint against the person filming. That's the world turned upside down."

Since the city council blocked off the Heizel plateau with concrete blocks, the cars have made way for speeding motorcycles, which seem to have a privatized track at their disposal.

Stop Rodeo Atomium has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the city council's response, or lack thereof. In an open letter, they accused the council of making residents "targets" and of failing to implement sustainable solutions. "Your passivity is a green light for the troublemakers and a slap in the face of the tax-paying citizen," the letter reads, highlighting the residents' feeling of being abandoned and unprotected.
