Bucsa advances to Monterrey Open round of 16

Spanish player Cristina Bucsa secured her spot in the round of 16 at the WTA Monterrey Open, joining seeded players Elise Mertens and Maja Chwalinska. Bucsa, the eighth seed, defeated Hungary's Anna Bondar in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

Bucsa, ranked 40th in the WTA rankings, will next play against Daria Vidmanova of the Czech Republic, who is ranked 90th in the world. The match against Bondar saw Bucsa hit five aces and win 83% of her first serve points. She broke Bondar's serve in the first game of the opening set, a crucial moment that boosted her confidence.

"Breaking her serve in the first game was fundamental to gaining confidence for this victory. I trusted my game a lot, and fortunately, things turned out very well for me," Bucsa stated after the match. Other players advancing included Panna Udvardy, Maria Timofeeva, and Daria Vidmanova. Meanwhile, Austrian Anastasia Potapova withdrew due to a back injury, with En-Shuo Liang taking her place.

The tournament, in its 18th edition and played on hard courts, offers over $1.2 million in prize money. The round of 16 will conclude with five matches, including top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova facing Clara Tauson, and Ann Li playing Maria Timofeeva.
