Building collapses in Delhi as rescue operation gets underway

A building collapsed near Satya Niketan in southwest Delhi on Sunday, and rescue teams were sent to the site as authorities worked to determine whether anyone was trapped or injured.

The Delhi Fire Department received an alert at about 1:30 p.m., police said. Emergency personnel and rescue teams then moved in to assess the situation and conduct search and rescue operations.

We received the call, informing us that an incident happened on Pyarelal Road, near Jewellers. Upon arrival, we learned that two to three people had already been rescued and sent to Jeevanmala Hospital. We are currently conducting a further search.

The collapse followed another building incident in Delhi on Aug. 21, when a wall of an old structure fell in the Karol Bagh area. Officials said several people were injured, while at least two were rescued and taken to hospital.

Ramgopal Meena, a divisional officer with the Delhi Fire Service, said the Karol Bagh building stood on Pyarelal Road near Jewellers and had been in a dilapidated condition. “We don't know exactly how old this building is, but it is a very old building. It was in a dilapidated state,” he said. Demolition work was underway at the site, according to the official.
