Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger Launch Joint Bid for 2032 Africa Cup of Nations

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have officially launched a joint bid to host the 2032 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), signaling a new era of cooperation among these West African nations. The announcement follows the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) opening of applications for the 2028, 2032, and 2036 editions of the continent's premier football tournament.

The joint proposal, put forth by the Malian Football Federation (FEMAFOOT), is built upon the principles of "solidarity, regional integration and sustainable development of African football." The organizers aim to present a "solid, credible bid" that introduces a fresh perspective to continental football. This initiative aligns with the recent formation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) by the three neighboring countries, a pact designed to bolster cooperation in security, infrastructure, trade, and economic development.

Despite their shared ambitions in football, the region faces significant security concerns. Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger are grappling with ongoing instability and attacks from armed jihadist groups. These governments have also shifted their foreign policy, moving away from traditional Western security partners and strengthening ties with Russia.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe addressed the potential security challenges, stating that the three countries "will have as good a chance as everybody else” of hosting the finals. This indicates that CAF will evaluate the bid based on its merits, regardless of the geopolitical and security landscape of the hosting nations.
