Cali’s Ciclovida return awaits safety assessment after Aug. 10 earthquake

Cali’s traditional Sunday Ciclovida remains on hold while officials assess whether its routes can safely reopen after the Aug. 10 earthquake.

The city government is reviewing the condition of route sections, nearby properties and infrastructure affected by the quake. The return will depend on a technical assessment from the Secretariat for Risk Management and Disaster Response. The Sports Secretariat has formally asked the agency to evaluate the sections proposed for the next stage of reopening.

We know what Ciclovida means to the city. We know that every Sunday we go out to a space for recreation, physical activity, sport and well-being.

A recent interagency committee brought together officials responsible for public health, disaster management, infrastructure, mobility and sport, as well as Metrocali. They examined the current condition of the routes and the logistical requirements for restoring the recreational and sporting space.

Sports and Recreation Secretary Alexander Camacho said the Ciclovida provides recreation, exercise, sport and well-being for residents. But he said its barriers were moved immediately after the disaster to help close perimeters and support emergency activities. The administration now wants a detailed assessment to protect both operational staff and the thousands of residents who use the event.

That is why, from the Interinstitutional Ciclovida Committee, we asked the Secretariat for Risk Management to evaluate the sections we will make available in this new stage.
