California Pug Jinny Lu Crowned 'World's Ugliest Dog'

Jinny Lu, a pug rescued from South Korea and brought to the United States, has been crowned the "World's Ugliest Dog" in California. Jinny Lu had previously secured second place in the competition last year.

The runner-up was Pinky, a 10-year-old Chihuahua and Pomeranian mix. This albino dog, with large pink ears, a pink nose, and watery blue eyes, had suffered from a skin disease while at a shelter. Pinky's participation in the contest marked its first time, and it earned a prize of $3,000.

Third place went to Otto, a two-year-old Chihuahua mix born with a cleft lip and palate. Otto's crooked smile apparently won over the judges, earning him $2,000. Other contenders included a French bulldog with a severe underbite, a Chinese crested dog with a lopsided tongue and bent hind legs, a nearly hairless dachshund mix, and Klara from Poland, a dog with shaggy fur and a tilted head.

Competitors presented themselves on stage before a clapping audience. A panel of judges evaluated the dogs based on their appearance, personality, and audience reaction. The winner, Jinny Lu, will also be featured on NBC's morning show in New York, along with her owner.

Organizers stated that the competition aims to highlight the lovable and beautiful qualities of these dogs, rather than mock them. Many of the participating animals come from shelters, and the event also serves to encourage the adoption of abandoned animals. The competition has been held for 50 years.
