Camera data helps police track suspects in Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City's extensive network of surveillance cameras is playing a crucial role in enhancing public safety and aiding law enforcement efforts. The city's Traffic Police Department (PC08) manages around 2,000 cameras, strategically placed along major routes and central areas, which are vital for monitoring the urban environment.

These cameras, increasingly integrated with Artificial Intelligence (AI), are capable of continuous monitoring, identifying license plates, and recognizing faces. This technology has already shown tangible results, contributing to a noticeable reduction in traffic violations such as running red lights, lane departures, and mobile phone use while driving in areas equipped with "red-light cameras." The AI capabilities allow for the detection of violations even without direct police presence.

Beyond traffic management, the camera system is being leveraged by local police departments to combat crime. In Hóc Môn commune, for instance, 115 cameras, 39 of which feature AI, have helped identify vehicles and individuals, leading to the dispersal of nighttime gatherings and assisting in the investigation of theft, assault, and robbery cases. The system's ability to track suspect movements using camera data has also been critical in solving criminal cases, such as a recent handbag snatching incident where suspect identification and apprehension were significantly aided by camera footage.

The city plans to further upgrade and expand its AI-integrated camera surveillance system. The focus is shifting from mere recording to deeper AI application for analyzing complex traffic behaviors and improving the accuracy of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) under various weather conditions. This technological advancement is expected to further strengthen the city's ability to maintain order and security.
