Vietnamese woman steals over $41,000 from aunt for crypto investment, loses all to scam

A 21-year-old woman in Can Tho, Vietnam, has confessed to stealing a safe containing over 1 billion Vietnamese dong (approximately $41,000 USD) from her aunt. The woman, identified as V.T.M.T., used the stolen funds to invest in cryptocurrency after connecting with an individual on social media.

According to reports, V.T.M.T. stole the safe on July 25 from her aunt, P.T.K.A., who later reported the theft to the Tan Thanh Commune police. The safe contained various currencies, including US dollars, Singapore dollars, Vietnamese dong, and gold of different karats, with the total value exceeding 1 billion dong.

After taking the safe, V.T.M.T. contacted a man she met online, intending to invest the money in cryptocurrency. However, shortly after transferring the funds, the contact severed all communication, leaving her with no way to recover the money. Realizing she had been defrauded, V.T.M.T. turned herself in to the Tan Thanh Commune police on July 31.

Authorities discovered the emptied safe submerged in a river behind the victim's house. The police are continuing their investigation into the theft and the subsequent cryptocurrency scam.
