Driver fined $1,400 for reversing on Vietnam expressway

A female driver faces a hefty fine of 35 million Vietnamese dong for the dangerous act of reversing on the Vĩnh Hảo - Phan Thiết expressway. The incident, captured by surveillance cameras, showed the 45-year-old driver, identified as D.T.H. from Khánh Hòa province, driving her car backward at Km163, near the Chợ Lầu intersection.

Reversing on the highway is an extremely dangerous act, which can lead to serious accidents because vehicles on the route all move at high speed.

The footage revealed the car moving in reverse on one lane while traffic sped past on the adjacent lane, creating a high risk of a serious accident. Traffic police immediately stopped the vehicle to address the violation.

Authorities from the Road Traffic Police Department No. 6 emphasized that reversing on expressways is a particularly hazardous maneuver. Vehicles on these routes travel at high speeds, making such actions potentially catastrophic. Drivers are strictly prohibited from stopping, reversing, or making U-turns on expressways, except for authorized emergency vehicles.

Drivers are absolutely not allowed to stop, reverse, or turn around on the highway under any circumstances, except when an emergency vehicle is performing its duties according to the law.

To prevent similar dangerous situations, police advised drivers who miss their exit to continue to the next one to legally turn around. They urged motorists not to risk their lives and the safety of others by attempting to reverse on the highway, even to save time.
