Canada allocates over $1.4 million in aid for earthquake victims in Colombia

Canada has pledged more than 2 million Canadian dollars (approximately $1.45 million USD) in humanitarian assistance to Colombia. This aid aims to support victims of the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck on August 10, causing at least 331 deaths, 4,439 injuries, and leaving 240 people missing.

International Development Minister Randeep Sarai stated the funds will provide essential resources such as food, emergency shelter, and clean water and sanitation services to the hardest-hit communities. The aid package includes $1.4 million CAD for the World Food Programme (WFP) to cover food assistance and logistics. An additional $350,000 CAD will go to Canadian Lutheran World Relief for emergency shelters and water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives.

The Colombian Red Cross will receive $250,000 CAD, with another $50,000 CAD allocated for emergency housing and food and hygiene kits. "In this difficult time, Canada stands with the people of Colombia," Sarai remarked. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand added that Ottawa is working with "trusted partners" to deliver vital aid. The Colombian government reports that the earthquake has impacted over 324,000 people across 494 municipalities, destroying more than 31,500 homes. This new contribution follows nearly $8.5 million CAD previously allocated by Canada for other humanitarian needs in Colombia this year.
