Cape Verde coach Bubista joins RS Berkane

Bubista, the coach who guided Cape Verde to their debut appearance in the World Cup last month, has been appointed as the new coach for Moroccan club Renaissance Berkane. The club announced the signing of a two-season contract yesterday.

Protracted negotiations preceded the agreement, which had included the possibility of Bubista juggling both the Cape Verde national team role and the club position. However, media reports suggest the 56-year-old is expected to step down from his national team duties in the coming days.

Renaissance Berkane has a strong recent record, having won the Moroccan league in 2025 and finishing as runners-up this year. The club also reached the semi-finals of the African Champions League last season and will compete in the continent's premier club competition again.

Bubista, whose real name is Pedro Leitao Brito, received significant recognition in 2025 when he was named African Coach of the Year following Cape Verde's historic World Cup qualification. At the tournament held in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, the team achieved notable draws against Spain and Uruguay before being eliminated by Argentina in the round of 32 after extra time.
