Capriles: US understands Venezuela crisis resolution hinges on vote

Venezuelan opposition lawmaker Henrique Capriles believes the United States clearly recognizes that the path to resolving the country's political crisis lies in electoral outcomes. Capriles shared his view on the social media platform X, reacting to Washington's move to dispatch former legislator Dinorah Figuera to engage in dialogue with the ruling party.

"Ultimately, Venezuelans will democratically decide their future. I believe the U.S. is very clear that the final decision rests with the people through their vote. That's why there are 3 phases and not just one. A plan that everyone who wants the country to change and have a future agrees with," Capriles stated.

Figuera, who supports the continuation of the opposition-led parliament elected in 2015, arrived in Venezuela after an eight-year absence. She is scheduled to meet with Jorge Rodríguez, the president of the current National Assembly. The U.S. Department of State indicated that Figuera's agenda includes key priorities such as rebuilding Venezuelan democratic institutions, strengthening the National Electoral Council, restoring lasting guarantees for political participation, and securing essential civic freedoms.

Capriles expressed hope that these efforts will be successful, leading to improvements in the economic and social conditions for Venezuelans while political changes unfold. In a separate interview, Figuera acknowledged having had "differences" with the leading opposition figure and Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado regarding her return to Venezuela.
