Car with four people, including a baby, shot at 12 times in Montevideo

A shooting incident in Montevideo, Uruguay, targeted a car carrying four people, including a four-month-old baby, on the night of July 30, 2026. The baby was unharmed, but a 25-year-old man in the vehicle suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg.

The attack took place in an area bordering the Colón and Lezica neighborhoods in northwestern Montevideo. The car sustained 12 bullet impacts. The injured man managed to drive a few blocks to a residence before being transported to Hospital Saint Bois, where his condition was reported as not life-threatening.

Montevideo police announced the arrest of a 28-year-old man suspected in the shooting. During the arrest, officers found the suspect attempting to evade them on a bicycle. He was found to be in possession of an empty 9mm pistol and a .40 caliber pistol magazine containing ten live cartridges.

The injured, who managed to continue driving to a house located a few blocks away, was transferred to Hospital Saint Bois, where he was diagnosed with a gunshot wound to the left leg with entry and exit wounds, so he is not at risk of death.

In a separate operation, police have intensified "Operation Ñandubay" to reduce the number of irregularly circulating motorcycles in Montevideo. Over the past few days, 14 vehicles were inspected and 25 individuals identified, with no reported instances of clandestine street races. The operation is set to continue through August 1st, focusing on preventing public disorder and ensuring road safety.

The deployment will continue during this Friday, July 31, and Saturday, August 1, in different parts of the capital, with actions aimed at preventing disorder and other events that may affect road safety, public order, and normal circulation. The tasks include preventive patrolling, observation, vehicle inspection, and controls of people and vehicles.
