Caregiver Arrested for Stealing Valuables from Elderly Patient in South Korea

A shocking case of betrayal has emerged in Incheon, where a caregiver, identified only as a woman in her 50s, has been apprehended by police on charges of theft. The suspect was entrusted with the care of an 80-year-old woman living alone, but instead of providing diligent service, she allegedly exploited her position for personal gain.

According to the investigation, the caregiver is accused of stealing a valuable gold necklace and bracelet, estimated to be worth around 20 million won (approximately 25 don), from the elderly woman's residence on March 7. Further, on March 17, she allegedly stole 200,000 won in cash from the same home. The suspect had been assigned to care for the victim since March and had regular access to the residence.

In a particularly brazen move, the caregiver reportedly sold one of the stolen gold necklaces for 8 million won, using 950,000 won of the proceeds for her own living expenses. When the elderly victim realized her cash was missing, the caregiver, perhaps attempting to deflect suspicion, proactively contacted the police to report the theft herself. However, the police, noting the lack of external entry signs, focused their investigation on those with access to the home. Under questioning, the caregiver confessed, reportedly stating that she acted out of "momentary greed."

While the police have stated that the caregiver has largely compensated the victim for the stolen amount, the incident raises serious concerns about the vulnerability of the elderly and the trust placed in caregivers. This case, as reported by Dong-A Ilbo, highlights the critical need for robust oversight and background checks within the caregiving industry to prevent such deplorable acts from occurring. The caregiver is expected to be transferred to the prosecution soon.
