Central Jakarta Court Rejects Extortion Defendant’s Plea

The alleged extortion and threats case involving businessman Vincent is moving to the evidence stage after the Central Jakarta District Court rejected the defense’s exception.

A panel led by Judge Ahmad Rasyid Purba issued the interim ruling on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026. The court scheduled the next hearing for Sept. 9, when prosecutors are expected to begin presenting evidence.

The essence of the judges’ ruling is that they rejected or did not accept the exception filed by the defendant’s legal counsel, Bangun, because the issues raised concerned matters of evidence.

Prosecutor Andri Saputra said the prosecution respected the judges’ reasoning. In his view, the defense challenge had already addressed the substance of the case, which should be examined during the evidentiary hearings rather than through an exception.

“The essence of the judges’ ruling is that they rejected or did not accept the exception filed by the defendant’s legal counsel, Bangun, because the issues raised concerned matters of evidence,” Andri said after the hearing.

The panel considered that the exception had already entered the substance of the case, and that was not in accordance with what was meant by Article 206, as I explained in last week’s hearing.

He added that the panel considered the defense arguments to have entered the central issues of the case and therefore to fall outside the scope of an exception under the legal provision cited by the prosecution. With the challenge rejected, prosecutors are preparing their evidence and plan to call Vincent first.

“Under the Criminal Procedure Code, the victim must be called first. We may call Vincent next week as the complainant,” Andri said. Vincent is both the person who reported the alleged offense and the alleged victim in the case.
