Central Java Distributes $51 Million in Aid to Tobacco Workers

The provincial government of Central Java has begun distributing direct cash assistance (BLT) funded by tobacco excise revenue (DBHCHT) totaling Rp51 billion ($51 million). The aid targets approximately 85,000 workers in the tobacco sector across the province. This initiative is designed to enhance the welfare of these workers and support their purchasing power amidst ongoing economic challenges. Beneficiaries will each receive Rp600,000 ($600) to assist with their daily needs. The distribution is being carried out in various locations, including Balai Desa Sumberejo in Mranggen, Demak. Officials expressed hope that the BLT program will not only improve the livelihoods of tobacco workers but also contribute to stabilizing the local economy by ensuring continued consumer spending. This financial support comes from the revenue generated by excise taxes on tobacco products, reflecting a government effort to redistribute some of these funds back into communities affected by the industry.
