Champions League: Slovan Bratislava signs Panamanian star Cristian Martínez ahead of qualifiers

Slovan Bratislava is set to compete in the Champions League qualifying quarterfinals against Georgia's Iberia 1999, with a notable new addition to their squad: Panamanian midfielder Cristian Martínez. The match marks the first leg of a crucial tie that could lead to the tournament's playoff round. The Slovak club, now under the management of former football star Yaya Touré in his head coaching debut, has significantly reinforced its lineup with Martínez's arrival.

Martínez, 29, joins Slovan Bratislava on a three-year contract after impressing during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers for Panama. He was a key player for his national team despite their group stage exit. Previously, he played for Ironi Kiryat Shmona in Israel. His move to the Slovak club sees him reunite with compatriot César Blackman, who has been with Slovan Bratislava since 2023. The existing relationship between the two players reportedly played a role in Martínez's decision to join the team.

Slovan Bratislava's executive director, Iván Kmotrík Jr., confirmed the club's long-standing interest in Martínez. Negotiations for the transfer were extensive due to multiple offers for the player. The club views Martínez as a significant asset as they aim to advance in the Champions League. Slovan Bratislava enters the tie as the favorite against Iberia 1999, a team with less European pedigree. Iberia 1999 reached this stage by narrowly defeating Flora Tallinn of Estonia with a 5-4 aggregate score.

The eight-time consecutive Slovak league champions are looking to secure an advantage in the away leg before returning home for the decisive match. Slovan Bratislava's recent European history, including participation in the 2024/25 Champions League League Phase under the new tournament format, underpins their confidence. Despite a record of 5 wins, 3 draws, and 8 losses in that campaign, the club aims to build on that experience. Their performance in the 2025/26 season saw them eliminated in the third qualifying phase, highlighting their consistent efforts to compete at the highest European level.
