Cheongju Launches 'Street Tree Guardian' Program to Protect Urban Greenery

Cheongju, a city celebrated for its verdant avenues, is taking its commitment to urban greenery a step further with the introduction of the 'Street Tree Guardian' initiative. This program, spearheaded by the Chungbuk Cheongju Sustainable Development Council, aims to foster a deeper connection between citizens and their environment by training and deploying dedicated volunteers.

The 'Street Tree Guardian' training course covered essential topics, including the history and cultural significance of Cheongju's street trees, understanding the city's urban forests, and the ecological importance of these trees. Participants also learned practical skills in tree monitoring, recording observations, and photography, equipping them to effectively contribute to the city's green infrastructure management.

These newly trained guardians will embark on a mission throughout May and June to observe and document the condition of Cheongju's street trees. Their findings, detailing ecological aspects and any signs of distress or disease, will serve as invaluable data for the city's systematic and proactive tree management efforts. This citizen-led approach not only enhances the city's ability to care for its trees but also cultivates a sense of shared responsibility and environmental stewardship among residents.

Cheongju's reputation as a 'city of street trees' is well-earned, notably exemplified by the iconic street stretching from the Cheongju IC on the Gyeongbu Expressway to Bansonggyo Bridge. This 4.53-kilometer avenue, lined with over a thousand zelkova trees planted in 1952, forms a magnificent canopy, creating a tunnel-like effect and a beloved landmark. Recognized for its beauty, it has been a backdrop for films and dramas, further cementing its status as a cherished natural and cultural asset.
