Chile's government is seeking to bolster legal protections for women by introducing a new bill aimed at strengthening precautionary measures against perpetrators of domestic and gender-based violence. The "Reinforced Precautionary Measures" bill was submitted to the Chamber of Deputies, proposing significant updates to existing laws and the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The initiative seeks to impose stricter consequences for those who violate restraining orders or misuse electronic monitoring devices. It also introduces new tools to ensure judicial resolutions are effectively supervised and complied with. Furthermore, the bill addresses the growing issue of digital aggression, introducing a new precautionary measure to protect victims from online harassment. Justice Minister Fernando Rabat highlighted the need to curb this form of violence, noting its psychological impact and potential to escalate to physical aggression. To prevent protection gaps, the bill aims to ensure continuous judicial oversight, even when a case transitions between family and criminal courts. It establishes protocols for coordination between these judicial branches to maintain protection for complainants and clarify responsibilities. Additionally, municipal security authorities will have expanded powers to assist in the supervision of these measures, enhancing on-the-ground enforcement.
