China boosts HIV/AIDS funding in Africa amid US aid cuts

China is significantly expanding its role in combating HIV/AIDS across Africa, launching new projects and supporting local medicine manufacturing under its Health Silk Road initiative. This move contrasts with the United States' reduction in health aid to several African countries.

While Washington has pursued bilateral health agreements, some nations like Zambia and Zimbabwe have refused to sign due to concerns over data sovereignty and the sharing of sensitive health information. This has created an opening for China to increase its influence and support in the region's health sector.

UNAIDS executive director Winnie Byanyima recently revealed that China's Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund is backing crucial HIV prevention projects in Lesotho, South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. Byanyima has commended China's contributions to health initiatives in Africa.

South Africa, which has a substantial HIV burden with approximately eight million people living with the virus, received a US$3.49 million grant from China last year. This funding is designated for prevention programs targeting over 50,000 young people and harm-reduction services for intravenous drug users.

The expanded Chinese funding aims to bolster local capacity in medicine manufacturing and support grassroots prevention efforts, addressing critical health challenges in developing nations.
