China delivers second donation of 5,000 photovoltaic systems to Cuba

China has provided Cuba with a second donation of 5,000 photovoltaic panels, aimed at electrifying homes and essential service centers across the island's 169 municipalities. The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment of Cuba announced the delivery on social media, highlighting that the solar energy systems will also benefit healthcare facilities, emergency medical services, and child care centers.

These new solar systems, managed by the China International Development Cooperation Agency, boast enhanced capabilities compared to those donated last year. They offer a power output exceeding 3.6 kilowatt-hours (kWh) and double the energy storage capacity to 14.3 kWh. This upgrade increases their efficiency and adaptability to Cuba's energy system challenges.

Cuba is grappling with a profound energy crisis, largely due to decades of underinvestment in its aging power infrastructure and, more recently, an oil blockade imposed by the United States. The government has described the energy situation as "critical" and "extremely tense," with frequent national grid blackouts reported in 2026. The majority of Cuba's thermoelectric power plants, responsible for 40% of the nation's electricity generation, were constructed in the 1960s and 1970s, with many units frequently out of service due to breakdowns or maintenance.

In response to this crisis, the Cuban government has prioritized solar energy, with significant support from China. A national program is underway to establish 92 solar farms across the island, aiming for a total installed capacity of approximately 2,000 megawatts (MW). This initiative represents a key strategy for the country to achieve greater energy independence and stability.
