China evacuates over a million people due to severe typhoon

Chinese authorities evacuated more than a million people as Typhoon Dolphin struck the country's eastern coast, bringing strong winds and heavy rain to areas including Shanghai. The typhoon first made landfall in Zhejiang province with wind gusts up to 150 kilometers per hour, followed by another landfall near Wenzhou about an hour later.

The storm caused significant travel disruptions, with around 1,400 flights canceled in Shanghai alone. Many tourist sites, including parts of Disneyland and Legoland, as well as observation decks along Shanghai's Bund, were closed. Authorities initially issued the highest red alert but downgraded Dolphin to a tropical storm by Monday morning.

As the typhoon moves inland, warnings remain in effect until Wednesday for heavy rainfall, flooding, and the risk of landslides across eastern and central China, as well as Shanghai. Residents have been advised to stay indoors. In Wenzhou, approximately 900,000 residents were relocated, and over a thousand emergency shelters were opened. Taizhou evacuated about 390,000 people. In Fujian province, dozens of ferry services and over a hundred offshore construction projects were suspended.

Chinese state television CCTV reported that Dolphin traveled about 6,000 kilometers before reaching China, with a lifespan more than three times the average typhoon. The storm's extensive circulation area is bringing exceptionally heavy precipitation. Separately, authorities detained two individuals for spreading false information online during the storm, including a man who allegedly used AI to create a fake video of someone falling from a building in Shanghai.

Dolphin had previously affected the Philippines, Taiwan, and Japan's Okinawa. In the Philippines, heavy monsoon rains and storms linked to the typhoon resulted in eight deaths and displaced over 7,000 people.
