Tree falls on Croatian beach, injuring swimmers

A tree toppled onto Balustrada beach in Crikvenica, Croatia, on Sunday, injuring four people. Two adults and two children were transported to the Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka, while several others sustained minor injuries and received on-site treatment. The fallen tree was an Aleppo pine, a species known for its relatively shallow root system. Officials noted that factors like prolonged drought and soil characteristics can affect tree stability. The beach's location on reclaimed land may have also impacted the tree's roots. The company responsible for the beach's maintenance, Eko-Murvica, expressed regret and wished the injured a swift recovery. They are investigating the incident with experts to determine the exact cause. Eko-Murvica also stated that root damage, which can lead to tree collapse, is not always detectable through regular visual inspections, especially when no outward signs of distress are present. While specialized assessment methods exist, they cannot guarantee complete safety. Following the incident, Eko-Murvica will conduct additional inspections of trees on Balustrada beach and other public areas.
