Dozens dead as 50,000 migrants storm Spanish enclave of Ceuta from Morocco

A significant political crisis has erupted in Spain following a massive influx of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, resulting in at least 57 deaths. An estimated 50,000 individuals crossed from Morocco into Ceuta within a 24-hour period, overwhelming the territory's approximately 85,000 residents and prompting strong reactions across the European Union.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the event as a "violation of territorial sovereignty" during a visit to Ceuta. He assured that the government would mobilize all available resources to guarantee the safety of the enclave's residents. Sánchez alleged that human trafficking syndicates orchestrated the mass crossing, capitalizing on a recent Spanish Supreme Court decision. This ruling, he explained, prevents the immediate deportation of migrants intercepted at sea under previously applied special regulations.

"Information about the decision spread rapidly through human trafficking syndicate networks, thus triggering a large-scale influx as occurred yesterday," Sánchez stated. To manage the situation, Spain plans to establish a temporary reception center for documentation, registration, screening, and expedited expulsion of individuals without legal grounds to remain. Additionally, physical border demarcation will be enhanced with a barrier of buoys near the breakwater at Tarajal Beach.

While Spanish government figures estimate around 50,000 migrants entered Ceuta, the regional president suggested the number could be as high as 60,000. The Spanish Interior Ministry reported deploying additional police and military personnel, noting that over 48,300 migrants had voluntarily returned to Morocco by early evening. The European Union presidency convened an emergency meeting to discuss the escalating migration crisis affecting Spain.
