China prioritizes car standards to lead global industry

China is strategically positioning itself to lead the global automotive industry by prioritizing the development and enhancement of its technical standards. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has announced a five-year plan to fast-track the formulation of core standards, aiming to solidify China's status as a global rule-setter in the rapidly evolving next-generation vehicle market.

This ambitious undertaking is directly supported by the national five-year plan released last month, which explicitly calls for stronger national standards to consolidate China's competitive edge. By upgrading industrial benchmarks, Beijing intends to foster market-driven mergers and acquisitions while simultaneously accelerating the exit of outdated production capacities. This dual approach is designed to ensure the industry's high-quality development and its ability to compete on a global scale.

Officials highlighted that the new standards will significantly raise product quality, citing improvements in electric vehicle battery cycle life as a key example. Furthermore, the initiative aims to spur technological innovation, particularly in the integration of artificial intelligence applications within vehicles. This push builds upon a previous MIIT directive from April last year, which targeted the strengthening of standards in "advantageous industries," with a specific focus on intelligent connected vehicles and their supporting infrastructure.

The announcement was made during the inaugural meeting of a new National Technical Committee of Auto Standardisation, formed after the previous committee's five-year term concluded. This signifies a renewed commitment and a structured approach to standard-setting, ensuring that China's automotive sector remains at the forefront of technological advancement and market influence.
