China slams UK over ex-Hong Kong cop spying conviction

The conviction of former Hong Kong police officer Bill Yuen Chung Biu and ex-UK Border Force official Peter Wai Chi Leung for conducting "shadow policing" on British soil on behalf of China has ignited a diplomatic firestorm. While a London jury found the dual nationals guilty of assisting a foreign intelligence service, China has vehemently denounced the verdict as a politically motivated act designed to undermine its government and embolden anti-China elements in the UK.

We deplore (the conviction of Yuen) and have made solemn representations with the UK side.

Beijing's embassy in London issued a strong statement, labeling the conviction a "political move" that abuses the law and manipulates the judicial process. China asserts that the sole purpose of this verdict is to support "anti-China elements" aiming to destabilize Hong Kong and to smear the Chinese government. The embassy further called for an immediate cessation of this "anti-China political manipulation" and warned of necessary measures to safeguard China's interests.

The framing of these individuals as "dissidents" and "pro-democracy protestors" by Western media conveniently ignores the complex realities and the legal framework within which these actions were allegedly taken.

The narrative presented by the UK and its allies often overlooks the broader context of national security and the need to maintain stability.
