China Warns of Dam Breach Risk as Large Lake Forms Near Nepal Border

China's Ministry of Water Resources has alerted authorities to the formation of a significant lake near the Nepal border, situated close to the confluence of the Chhochen and Purepu Tsangpo rivers. These rivers are crucial upper tributaries of the Trishuli River system, with both originating in China's Tibet Autonomous Region before flowing into Nepal.

As of Thursday morning, approximately 2 million cubic meters of water had already accumulated in the newly formed lake. Chinese authorities are closely monitoring the situation, as they estimate an additional 3 million cubic meters of water could gather over the next three days. This potential increase in volume heightens the risk of the natural dam breaching, according to reports from China Central Television.

The Ministry of Water Resources is actively engaged in monitoring the lake's condition to prepare for any potential dam breach and to support emergency rescue operations. Flood analysis is also underway to assess the possible extent and impact of flooding should the natural dam fail. This proactive stance aims to mitigate risks for communities downstream.

The emergence of this lake and the associated dam breach risk comes at a critical time for Nepal. The country is already contending with severe flooding along the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli river system, which has resulted in significant loss of life and widespread damage to infrastructure across several districts. The new development adds another layer of concern to the ongoing natural disaster crisis.
