Nepal flood death toll reaches 289 as hundreds remain out of contact

Nepal is grappling with the aftermath of severe flash floods that have claimed 289 lives as of Thursday afternoon. Hundreds more, including foreign tourists, remain out of contact, according to police.

The disaster has devastated multiple districts, with Chitwan reporting the highest number of recovered bodies at 108, followed by Nawalparasi East with 62 and Dhading with 27. Other affected areas include Gorkha, Rasuwa, Nawalparasi West, Nuwakot, and Tanahun.

National disaster authorities report that 826 people are still missing. This figure includes Nepali Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force personnel, as well as domestic and foreign tourists. The floods surged along the Trishuli and Narayani river systems, causing widespread damage to settlements, roads, and bridges.

Government agencies and security forces are actively engaged in search, rescue, and relief efforts across the affected regions. Authorities are working to compile comprehensive figures on casualties and trace those still missing.
