Chinese military unveils AI system to plan and coordinate mass air strikes

China's air force is now employing an artificial intelligence system designed to plan and coordinate large-scale air operations involving more than 100 aircraft. The "intelligent strike planning system," as detailed in a state television documentary, aims to assist commanders and pilots by optimizing target prioritization, synchronizing attack waves, and assigning specific roles to various military units.

The system was developed by a team headed by Senior Colonel Deng Jianping to support training exercises that have increasingly involved complex formations and diverse aircraft types. Deng explained that traditional calculation methods struggle to keep pace with the high-speed movement of "hundreds of targets and dozens of formations" in modern aerial warfare scenarios.

The hardest part isn’t writing code or building models. It’s thoroughly understanding battlefield logic. Targets, firepower, penetration and damage assessment – the entire strike chain.

According to Deng, the most challenging aspect of developing the system was not the coding or model building, but rather achieving a deep understanding of "battlefield logic." This includes meticulously analyzing the entire strike chain, from identifying targets and assessing firepower to penetration and damage evaluation. He stressed that even a minor flaw in this logic could determine the difference between mission success and failure.

The CCTV program, broadcast to commemorate the 99th anniversary of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), indicated that the AI system has been utilized in "multiple" exercises. Its implementation signifies a significant advancement in China's military capabilities, particularly in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of complex air combat operations.
