Chocó governor seeks earthquake aid in five languages: “Together for reconstruction”

Chocó Governor Nubia Carolina Córdoba has turned to five languages to seek support for the Colombian department after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake. In a video shared on social media, she appealed in English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese for help with the territory’s reconstruction.

The earthquake struck on Aug. 10, with its epicenter in San José del Palmar, Chocó. Rescue teams launched operations to reach people trapped under rubble, while collection centers were opened to channel assistance toward the hardest-hit areas.

The disaster left people affected, injured, missing and dead, and hundreds of buildings collapsed. Rescue agencies carried out extended operations as they searched for survivors among the remains of homes and other structures.

Córdoba emphasized the role of solidarity in the recovery effort. “United for the reconstruction of Chocó,” she said in the video, while thanking the people, organizations, communities and institutions that had joined what she called the noble cause of supporting reconstruction and helping affected communities recover.

In a separate update, the governor said the humanitarian assistance phase had been stabilized, with more than 305 tonnes of aid deployed to affected municipalities. With nearly a month having passed since the earthquake, she said authorities would allow time to plan the next deliveries.
