Magnitude 3.7 earthquake reported in Colombia's Chocó department

A magnitude 3.7 earthquake struck Colombia's Chocó department on Sunday afternoon, according to the Colombian Geological Service.

The quake occurred at about 5:15 p.m., with its epicenter in the municipality of Medio San Juan, near Andagoya. It had a depth of 38 kilometers and was located 12 kilometers from the municipality of Sipí.

The Geological Service asked residents to report tremors through its official “Felt Earthquake” form. National disaster authorities also advised families to maintain an emergency plan, identify safe places and keep supplies including water, a flashlight, a radio, nonperishable food and identification documents.

During an earthquake, residents should remain calm and shelter in structurally safe areas, such as beneath a desk or near a column. Authorities advised avoiding doors, windows and objects that could fall. Afterward, people should avoid elevators, running and pushing, assess structural damage before re-entering buildings and turn off gas, water and electricity if it is safe to do so.
