Cine de Barrio launches Misiones film series alongside two new workshops

Cine de Barrio will begin its “Misiones in Focus” film series on Saturday, presenting four productions made in Argentina’s Misiones province.

The opening film, “Mitra, Turn Off the Light So We Can See,” directed by Diego Bellocchio, will screen Sept. 5 at 5:30 p.m. Admission will be free. It follows Lucía, a psychologist who works on a support line for victims of violence and is attacked during a stormy night. She becomes obsessed with identifying her attacker and is drawn into a dark spiral connected to a worshipper of the pagan god Mithras.

The following films will be shown on successive Saturdays at 6 p.m. Guillermo Rovira’s “And the Intense Rain” follows two friends, Sol and Naty, who reunite for an ayahuasca ritual and confront unresolved emotions. Axel Monsú’s “For Your Own Good” centers on Zulma, an adolescent growing up in an isolated jungle community ruled by fear and oppressive traditions.

The series will close on Sept. 26 with Verónica Gentili’s “Dog Girl,” about Candelaria, a teenage girl from Misiones who confronts her authoritarian father with the help of an imaginary character called Dog Girl. Each screening will be accompanied by a conversation with the director.

Cine de Barrio will also launch a seminar series on film and thought. Juana Miranda González will lead sessions on Gilles Deleuze’s “Cinema 1: The Movement-Image” on Sept. 5 and 12. Raúl Acevedo will lead a second seminar on Jacques Rancière and Slavoj Žižek on Sept. 19 and 26.

This seminar proposes a journey through the main notions of Gilles Deleuze’s The Movement-Image to question and problematize cinema as thought, language and a possibility for knowledge
