Coahuila Proposes Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Animal Abuse Cases

Coahuila is set to establish a specialized prosecutor's office dedicated to crimes against sentient beings, Governor Manolo Jiménez announced. This initiative aims to bolster the state's institutional response to animal abuse and ensure that perpetrators face the full force of the law. The proposal will be presented in the coming weeks and involves a restructuring of the general prosecutor's office.

The move comes in response to a series of disturbing animal cruelty cases reported in Coahuila. Recently, a dog named Rocky in Saltillo was dragged for several blocks, tied to his owner's vehicle. In another incident, authorities rescued a dog that had been buried alive and chained, though the animal later died. These events have highlighted the urgent need for more robust legal mechanisms to protect animals.

The proposed specialized office will allow for more focused and effective follow-up on these types of crimes. Governor Jiménez emphasized that in Coahuila, no one is above the law. The creation of this dedicated unit is intended to improve the investigation, prosecution, and punishment of animal abuse and violence, ensuring protection for sentient beings and the firm application of penalties, which can include up to eight years in prison.
