Cognitive Crisis Narrows Indonesian Children's Imagination Space, IHDC Warns

The imagination of Indonesian children is reportedly shrinking, with a growing number expressing uniform career aspirations such as content creator, YouTuber, or influencer. This trend concerns the Indonesia Health Development Center (IHDC), which views it not merely as a shift in career preferences but as an indicator of diminishing cognitive abilities to envision and map out future paths. The IHDC attributes this narrowing to the overwhelming influx of digital information and foundational weaknesses in cognitive development.

IHDC has introduced the concept of 'silent cognitive burden' to describe a slow but pervasive cognitive decline that could undermine Indonesia's future human resources. This burden affects not only academic performance but also critical thinking, imagination, and the capacity to set future goals. Ray Wagiu Basrowi, Executive Director of IHDC, argues that current assessments of child development, focused on physical health and academic achievement, overlook crucial neurocognitive abilities.

Basrowi advocates for a new measurement paradigm that includes assessing children's 'Cognitive and Future Imaginative Capacity.' This capacity, he explains, encompasses the neurocognitive ability to learn effectively, think critically, solve problems, be creative, and establish future orientation, essential foundations for an innovative and productive generation. He emphasized this during a Strategic Studies Series presentation in South Jakarta on July 23, 2026.

This vital capacity is currently threatened by four interconnected health issues: uncorrected refractive errors, iron deficiency, protein deficiency, and behavioral disorders. IHDC asserts that these factors collectively impede brain development and learning processes. Furthermore, children are absorbing vast amounts of information without a commensurate development in critical review skills, leaving them unable to effectively discern reliable information from misinformation.
