Malaysia Develops East Coast Areas into Medical Tourism Destinations for Indonesians

Malaysia is expanding its medical tourism offerings by developing Kuala Terengganu and Kuantan on the East Coast as new destinations for Indonesian patients. This initiative aims to provide alternatives to established medical hubs like Penang, Melaka, and Kuala Lumpur, catering to a growing demand for flexible waiting times and accessible healthcare from Indonesia.

The KMI Group is focusing on enhancing specialized services in these areas to match the quality found in West Coast facilities. KMI Kuala Terengganu Medical Centre, for instance, offers cardiology, orthopedics, and pediatrics. Muhammad Ghazali Zainal Yusof, General Manager of KMI Kuala Terengganu, expressed hope that these new options will attract more Indonesian patients and simultaneously develop Terengganu's tourism industry. The facilities also emphasize patient privacy with single-bed rooms and integrate medical recovery with natural surroundings to support patients' physical and mental well-being.

Meanwhile, Kuantan is strengthening its medical infrastructure with specialized services in internal medicine, surgery, and cancer care. Medical Director of KMI Kuantan Medical Centre, Prof Dr Mokhtar bin Awang, stated that the hospital possesses expertise comparable to West Coast hospitals and plans to build new facilities, including a center of excellence. Beyond healthcare, both cities boast tourism infrastructure, including landmarks, historical sites, and natural beaches, offering additional benefits for accompanying families during treatment and recovery periods.
