Colombia launches nationwide reconstruction after 7.4 magnitude earthquake

Colombia is embarking on a comprehensive reconstruction plan after a powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake devastated the Choco region, particularly the city of Quibdo. President De la Espriella visited the affected area and stated that over 150,000 homes suffered damage.

"The reconstruction of the homeland begins today, starting from Quibdo," De la Espriella announced. "This process will be carried out with the guidance of engineers and experts." He detailed that 4,480 tons of construction materials will be delivered initially to repair damaged homes. Families with lightly damaged houses will receive repair materials, while those whose homes are irreparable will be provided with new housing.

Financial assistance will also be provided to families who lost their homes. Starting August 26, these families will receive a monthly aid of approximately $285 for three months. The president emphasized the need for a swift yet transparent and accountable reconstruction process. He warned against using the emergency for political gain or favoritism, vowing to personally oversee the process and monitor progress closely. The earthquake, which struck on August 10, has claimed 329 lives. The estimated damage from the quake is $9.5 billion. To manage the reconstruction, a new fund called "Miracle Fund" (Fondo Milagro) has been established, modeled after a similar fund created after the 1999 Armenia earthquake. The government plans to offer rent assistance, facilitate public services, and provide support for new housing and home improvements. De la Espriella has also called on contractors and financial institutions to support the reconstruction efforts.
