Colored Papadums Threaten Kidney Health, Health Ministry Urged to Investigate

Malaysia's Ministry of Health is being urged to investigate papadums, particularly those with bright artificial colors, amid growing concerns about their potential health risks. The Penang Consumer Association (CAP) has called for an immediate probe into these products, which are widely available and affordable, selling for as low as RM1.25 per 100 grams.

When this happens, the state authorities reported that excessive synthetic dyes in papadums can contribute to digestive problems, allergic reactions, and kidney complications.

These concerns are amplified by actions taken in India, where the Tamil Nadu Food Safety Department has already banned similar colored papadums. Reports from that region indicate that excessive synthetic dyes in papadums can lead to digestive problems, allergic reactions, and serious kidney complications. CAP's own market surveys have found that brightly colored papadums, often imported from India, remain easily accessible in Malaysia, especially in Penang.

The vibrant colors, while appealing, particularly to children, increase the risk of exposure to illegal or excessive coloring agents. CAP warns that prolonged exposure to certain banned or overused artificial food colorings is linked to severe health risks. The association is pressing the Ministry of Health's Food Safety and Quality Division to conduct thorough sampling and laboratory analysis of colored papadums sold across various retail outlets, including supermarkets, grocery stores, night markets, roadside stalls, and import premises.

The bright and attractive colors also make this food product a choice for families, especially for children, thus increasing the risk of exposure if it contains excessive or unapproved coloring.

CAP insists that any products found to contain coloring agents exceeding permissible levels or containing prohibited substances must be immediately withdrawn from the market. Furthermore, they demand strict enforcement actions against importers, distributors, and retailers involved in selling these potentially harmful products.
